Symbolic
Painting of FROG

Dedicated to Frog

FROG is the Totem for Water.

Frogs, with their comical antics and wonderful songs, teach us about joy, humor, and communicating. They also have other teachings and help for humans.
The Center Circle Stone for Frog is the last of the Seven Center Stones. Father Sun, Mother Earth, Grandmother Moon, and the four Elemental Spirits form the Seven powers close to Creator that help to build and maintain our Home. They also watch over us Two Legged Beings and All Our Relations, and will assist us to grow Spiritually, Physically, Mentally, and Emotionally if we ask and listen.

When I looked for and found images of Algae, the plant totem for the element Water, I was truly amazed. The two pictures above only show the surface, what we usually see, and often think "yuk". But as I looked at image after image of the Individuals that make up that surface, a renewed feeling of respect and awe for Great Mystery, Creation, and our Relations, Algae, surged through me!
Please look at some of the Alga images at:
Freshwater Diatoms and
Algae (except diatoms)
You too will be awed by the vast variety and unimaginable beauty of these wonderful Beings - Algae.

The brown algae, commonly called kelp, are the largest seaweeds. Pacific species can reach 65 m (213 ft) in length and have structures that resemble leaves and stems, as well as large air-filled bladders and strong holdfasts that anchor them against heavy surf.

Red Algae, a large group of water plants with reddish pigments (about 6000 species), are abundant in clear tropical waters Their red pigment enables them to carry on photosynthesis at deeper levels than is possible for ordinary green algae. Most species grow near tropical and subtropical shores below the low-tide mark. A few are found in fresh water. Most red algae are small to medium-sized and multicellular. They vary greatly in shape and may be platelike, coralline, crustlike, leathery, or featherlike. Coralline species accumulate lime as they grow and contribute to the structure of coral reefs.
"Seaweed" is a commercially important food and is harvested mainly from red algae. Agar, used as a laboratory culture medium is also obtained from red algae

Green Algae, numbering about 6000 to 7000 (!) species , are known as green algae because of the bright green color of their two chlorophylls which are unmasked by other pigments. They are believed to be the most immediate relatives of the green land plants. Green algae occur as single cells, in colonies, and as multicellular filaments. Still water ecosystems are divided into different zones. In open-water zones, plant plankton and filamentous green algae supply most of the energy to the ecosystem. Green algae are an excellent addition to food. They are rich in minerals and vitamins, and are also important as a source of food for our aquatic Relations.

Much of the above information on Algae was learned in Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia

River Rock from buy-stone.com
Site no longer available

The Stone or "mineral" totem for Water is River Rock, which can be obtained in any river. Please be sure to ask the Rock Spirit if it wishes to leave it's home and come with you, to help teach you about your Water connection and emotional understanding.

Sun Bear and Wabun Wind teach: "Native peoples honored River Rock because they contain the energies both of the Earth and of the waters on the Earth. River Rocks were considered to have the medicine of both these elements and to make the water medicine particularly accessible to people who need it. They were thought to aid people in singing the songs of Earth and Water."
"River Rocks can aid you with healing, cleansing, stabilizing, or changing your life. Working with River Rocks can release negative patterns, particularly emotional ones. River Rocks are especially potent if you work with them in their natural surroundings. These stones are soothing, calming, and healing on deep physical and emotional levels. They can evoke change that is concrete, tangible, and unshakable. River Rocks are particularly helpful for problems that arise from growing up in a dysfunctional family system. They assist people in releasing the old, allowing it to flow away from them." From Dancing With The Wheel, page 126.

The color for the Stone representing Frog, the Element Water, is Blue/Green, the color "of the ocean on a clear sunlit day." (The color here is called Light Seagreen, but I think it is too dark.) Use this color, or blue and green, for cleansing, purifying, soothing, of the body, mind and spirit. Having these colors around you also promotes healing, happiness and contentment.
I have tried to reflect the colors for each position in the Wheel in the colors used on the page for that Stone. I cannot always find just the right one and still have the page easy to read, so I try for an in- between.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
When doing ceremony with a Wheel or constructing one, we now start the "Outside" Circle. The Stones for the 4 Cardinal Directions are honored or put in place next. In the part of the country I live in, everyone "starts" with the East, Wabun, the place of Sunrise, Spring, New Beginnings.
In the Sun Bear Books, the first Direction to be honored or its Stone placed is the North, Waboose, the time of midnite to dawn, winter solstice to spring equinox, when all things are laying in the womb of Mother Earth and resting, germinating; preparing to burst forth when the time of Wabun arrives. Some feel this is the true beginning, this time of preparation.
1/21/2000: ALL 12 OF THE MOON PAGES WERE COMPLETED IN AUGUST 1999, AND THE FOUR DIRECTIONS JUST BEFORE THAT.
SINCE THIS WHEEL USES THE EAST AS THE PLACE OF "STARTS", THE NEXT STONE PAGE IS FOR WABUN, SPIRIT KEEPER OF THE EAST.
IF YOU WISH TO START IN THE NORTH, THAT IS GOOD TOO. GO TO THE DIAGRAM OF SUN BEAR WHEEL ('BACK' BELOW) AND CLICK ON WABOOSE, THE BUFFALO, AT THE TOP OF THE DIAGRAM (not the one in the corner).
After the Four Directions Stones have been placed and/or honored, you proceed to the Stones for the 12 Moons, beginning with Budding Trees Moon, first Moon of Wabun, which begins with the Spring Equinox.
